Monroe Stewart's Hooch Junction

Scenes from the New River area of Monroe Stewart's N Scale Layout. Monroe's freelanced layout is vast in scope. In about a 1000 square foot area he models the C&O and N&W from WV coal mines near the New River to a tidewater Virginia port. The layout includes a lot of everything: steel mill, four track horseshoe curve, large modern city, narrow gauge timber railroad, container port with numerous large ships and several yards.

The scene to the left depicts the New River canyon area on the layout. This particular area of the layout was designed by Matt Schaefer, who also helped with the construction. The spectacular scene includes both sides of the canyon creating a 8 foot long deep valley that is unique in model railroading

The scope of Monroe's modeling is evident in the middle photo which shows a small part of the town in Schaefer's Creek, named in honor of Matt Schaefer. Monroe included over twenty miner's homes in the town scene.

The coal mine scene shown in the bottom photo has been heavily reworked in Photoshop by the editor to combine Monroe's mine scene with a photo of the actual New River near Alloy, WV.

Hooch Junction has been featured in several model railroad magazines and a model railroad video.
