Alleghany, VA. the fascinating summit on the C&O mainline. In the steam era helper engines made this the scene of amazing activity. The action is less varied in the diesel era, but the struggle of getting tonnage trains over the mountain is drama enough. You may note that Alleghany is in the Alleghany Subdivision and not the New River Subdivision. In spite of this web site's name the object is to share information on all things C&O.
